It’s an exciting time to be a weaver!

I weave on a TC2 Jacquard hand loom, using digital design tools to explore a new data-intensive language of woven interlacement. Departing from traditional weave structures, my approach uses atomized weaves and controlled chromatic blending to build imagery that is formed thread by thread. Each pixel corresponds to a single thread on the surface of the cloth. The diameter of the thread defines the pixel size—smaller threads allow for finer detail and more effective optical color mixing.

While this process offers extraordinary precision, traditional weaving knowledge remains essential. The quality of the cloth, the mechanical behavior of the threads, and the integrity of the selvedge are all grounded in traditional weaving knowledge and practices.

The TC2 has invited a new wave of innovation in contemporary craft, and artists are only beginning to explore the possibilities of this transformative technology.
